How does an ingrown toenail develop?
An ingrown toenail can develop due to:
- Toenails that are cut incorrectly
- Excessive sweating
- Low foot hygiene
- Tight-fitting shoes, tights or socks
- Infections
- The shape of the toe
- Nail injury
How are ingrown toenails treated?
Ingrown toenails can be treated and prevented by practising good foot hygiene, regularly trimming the nails and by gently pushing the skin away from the nails with a cotton bud.
Better fitted or looser shoes should be worn to prevent the ingrown nail developing. Painkillers can also help with pain management.
Surgery is also an option for more extreme ingrain toenail cases.
Our Cork podiatrists can create a treatment plan to treat and help prevent the reforming of an ingrown toenail
