What are Verrucas?
Verrucas are rough, small growths on the foot. Verrucas are very common and most people develop a verruca at least once in their lives.
Verrucas on the skin are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is transferred when a person’s foot makes contact with a contaminated surface.
How do Verrucas develop
As mentioned verrucas are caused by the HPV virus and develop almost exclusively on the foot.
Verrucas can be spread by skin to skin contact or by sharing objects that have been contaminated by the virus, like socks, shoes, towels etc.
How are Verrucas treated?
Although verrucas don’t pose any serious health risks, they can be uncomfortable and unsightly.
In about 65 – 80% of cases untreated verrucas will clear up within one to two years.
However, individuals with weaker immune systems may find it takes much longer for their verruca to disappear.
Some of the treatments we offer to clients with Verrucas include:
- Cryotherapy (freezing the skin cells)
- Salicylic acid
- Laser Therapy
Our podiatrist will recommend the right treatment on a case by case basis
